My name is Tucker Sherrill and I am a senior this year. I am
majoring in Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering/Premed. As
far as school goes, I am an engineering mentor which means that I help the
underclassmen engineering students with homework and general tips and advice to
help make their semesters go by easier. I am also a member of the
university's men's lacrosse team, where I play midfield.

Outside of school and lacrosse, I enjoying
spending as much time outside as possible.
I love to play disk golf, go longboarding or fishing, and hang out by
the pool. Up in the mountains is my
favorite place to be, and I recently took a two week backpacking trip through
the collegiate peaks near Buena Vista, Colorado. During that trip I climbed to the summit of
three different mountain peeks, all of which stand over 14,000 feet tall; Mt
Elbert, Mt Harvard, and Mt Colombia. Aside from backpacking, I also love to go
snowboarding and mountain biking.
I spent this summer in Houston, Texas where I am originally from for an internship with National Oilwell Varco (NOV) in the
research and development facility for the pressure control group, where I
helped design and test new blow out preventers.
Once I graduate this coming May, my dream would be to move to Denver,
Colorado so that I can stay close to the mountains. I will most likely end up back in Houston
though either working for an oil and gas company or for a chemical
company. I would also like to eventually
end up working as a biomedical engineer in the medical field, working in tissue
synthesis and biomedicines.
I have one sister that I am very close with who just started her
freshman year at Texas A&M University, and I have two dogs, both
cockerspaniels. I love getting to go home to see my parents and sister whenever possible, though it does not get to happen as much as I would like. They are everything to me and I would do anything for them.
Just to get this straight, you are double majoring in chemical engineering and biomedical engineering AND you are pre-med? I am not sure if that's incredible, insane, or incredibly insane...or insanely incredible? But power to you! I think it's really awesome that you're a mentor for the new engineering students. You're making a difference to them with your time, and that's pretty noble. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteConsidering the heat right now, Colorado and the mountains sound amazing. When I lived in Las Vegas, we would always go to Mt. Charleston in the winter so we could experience actual snow. Denver would be a great place to live.
ReplyDeleteHow did you get involved in Lacrosse? That is a unique sport and I have always wondered what gets people interested in it.
I am impressed you keep up such a physical lifestyle even being a ChemE, I bet you keep fairly busy. I am curious which program do you mentor with I know several people from Chevron-Phillips. Colorado would be an awesome place to live, especially if you love the outdoors. It sounds like a lot of fun to work on tissue synthesis especially if you like a challenge.
ReplyDeleteThat's great about your sister, Tucker: my husband is a very loyal Aggie (he did Meteorology there) so he will be glad to know there is a student this semester with a fellow Aggie in the family! I'm from Texas also (Austin), but given a choice between Houston and Colorado, I would take Colorado for sure. The Gulf coast is fun and all... but the mountains are just breath-taking, even if you gaze up from down below without climbing them. As you can imagine, mountains are a big part of the Indian epic world, so keep an eye out for them! There's a great legend in the Ramayana about Mount Mainaka, the last of the mountains that still had wings so that it could fly!

Interestingly enough, I am also majoring in Chemical Engineering and specializing Biomedical Engineering. I have never played lacrosse but it looks like a difficult sport to play. I think it is great that you are able to spend time with nature. I think that you dream job as a biomedical engineer is very interesting and I hope that you have a good senior year and are able to find a job in Denver.
ReplyDeleteHi Tucker! Let me first just say WOW about you majoring in both Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering and being Pre-med! That's pretty insane but inspiring, I must say! I'm Pre-med as well, so I think it's pretty interesting that you know what specific field you want to be working in as a Biomedical Engineer in the future, eventually. I think it's pretty cool that you're an engineering mentor for underclassmen engineering students. It sounds like you love the outdoors, which is pretty cool too! Good luck this semester and in all your future endeavors!
ReplyDeleteHey Tucker!
ReplyDeleteChemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering/ Premed sound really difficult so it is really impressive that you are an engineering mentor. I think it is really cool that you have climbed three different mountain peaks. That is really impressive. Last summer, I studied abroad in Ireland and climbed Croagh Patrick which is a 2507 ft mountain. It nearly killed me but I am so glad I did it. I look forward to reading more of your posts!
Hi, Tucker! As many of our classmates have noted, your majors are so impressive! I truly admire your dedication and think that your career ideas sound fascinating! I have a good fried who is also looking at working in Houston after her internship this summer. It's a wonderful city! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Tucker, thanks for letting us get to know a little more about you! I am also a senior interested in applying engineering concepts to healthcare- however, I am pursuing the industrial and systems engineering pre-med track. My sister did the chem-e/biomed program as well and loved it. I wish you the best of luck in your senior year! It sounds like you have a lot of opportunities ahead of you.
ReplyDeleteHi Tucker! Your major is definitely very impressive. I am a premed major and cannot imagine majoring in engineering as well. I think it is very kind of you to mentor engineering underclassmen. Good luck with everything this year and all of your future endeavors!
ReplyDeleteTucker, it is so nice to meet you! I also love to go backpacking. This summer, I hiked the 4-Pass Loop near Aspen, CO. We passed by Mt. Elbert and several other 14ers, but I haven’t had the chance to climb one yet. Colorado is such a beautiful state. One of my favorite sights was on the drive back to Oklahoma. On my right there were the mountains, and on the left was a double rainbow over a farmhouse.
ReplyDeleteThat backpacking trip in Colorado sounds amazing and I am so jealous! I love Colorado and am planning on taking a short weekend trip there in November. It sounds like your school schedule keeps you very busy and I think it is awesome that you help people with their homework outside of class. I'm sure that's a great way to keep the easier work coming naturally so you can focus on the more difficult material, plus it's nice to help out! I hope you have a great semester!
ReplyDeleteI would love to live in Colorado. I have only been there once in my life, but it was beautiful. There is a lot of culture there that you cannot find anywhere else in the United States. Houston is a good choice too. Your future goals seem very interesting and I hope you the best and that you reach them!
ReplyDeleteHi Tucker! How is the Houston area? I have always heard really negative things about it. I am from the Ft. Worth area. I know it is pretty humid in that part of Texas. My sister goes to Sam Houston University. How does your sister like Texas A&M? That is a really great school, not as great as OU though! It was nice meeting you!
ReplyDeleteHello Tucker!
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to go backpacking, I think being outside and enjoying nature is breathtaking. One thing that I wanted to do that was on my bucket list was to climb Mt. Everest. However, I just saw the movie Everest and it kind of changed my mind a little bit. But I applaud you for doing it.
Hi, Tucker. I hope your semester is going well! Lacrosse has always seemed like a fun and interesting sport to me. I too like to spend a lot of time outdoors. Mountains and backpacking are both great, especially together. Moving near some mountains sounds like a great idea. I would love to have the opportunity someday to do the same thing. Good luck with the rest of your studies!
ReplyDeleteHey Tucker. It sounds like you have a pretty busy schedule. That's really cool that you play lacrosse. That is one sport that I always thought looked really fun. I wish there was more of a prescence of it up here in Oklahoma. My little cousin plays it so I live my lacrosse dreams vicariously through him. That's awesome that you climbed three 14ers in one trip. I also love the outdoors, but I have yet to do even one 14er.
ReplyDeleteHey Tucker! I am jealous of your outdoorsman skills. I always try to do more things outside when the weather is nice, but I get eaten alive mosquitos, chiggers, etc. I love that you have two cocker spaniels. They are such cute dogs. I had one called Lady (from a certain movie), when I was very young. She was such an affectionate, but dumb dog. I hope your semester went well!
ReplyDeleteHi Tucker! I have to say, I'm jealous you've spent so much time in the mountains. I've never been to Colorado and have always wanted to go. So many of my friends have sent me pictures from their trips and it looks truly beautiful. I know a lot of people that moved to Denver after graduating and absolutely love it. It seems like a great place to start out!
